The Halo 2 Original Soundtrack is further evidence that contemporary popular entertainment revolves around 15-year-old males. This music anthology from the sequel to the immensely popular Halo saga, as well as music "inspired by" the game, also demonstrates how the video game industry can outdo Hollywood's production values. The original score by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, which is heavy on synthesizers, is filled with brooding atmospherics and pulsing exotic sounds that can rival even the renowned production values of Hans Zimmer. Additionally, a lineup of (mostly) worthy rock star guest appearances adds an exciting edge to the soundtrack. Legendary guitarist Steve Vai's powerful playing enhances the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while Breaking Benjamin, an alternative metal band, delivers the appropriately dramatic "Blow Me Away." However, the centerpiece of the soundtrack is Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite, which combines 1970s progressive rock with modern rock, creating a moody atmosphere and evocative musical drama. --Jerry McCulley
